A meditation on darkness, The Incredible Shrinking Man is an emotive and confessional album that comes from the subliminal depths of lives not fully realised. Like ‘a rudderless boat on an endless sea’, lyrically, it will resonate with anyone worn down by mediocrity and the relentless boredom of just getting by.

From the signature, scene-setting guitar-scapes and jolting lyrical content to the vulnerable baritone vocal, it is an alt-folk-ambient-country-prog, genre-flirting piece that sounds not quite like anything else. Ostensibly drums, guitar, keys and vocals, this is a collection of spacious, sonically enhanced songs, recorded sporadically, ‘in the moment’, over the course of three years. It was the genius of producer Stephen W Tayler that connected the subliminal threads to create a compelling and coherent album.

Uncontrived and intuitive, there is obvious musical chemistry between the trio. Spanning huge crescendos to pin-drop silence, the minimalist instrumentation leverages extreme dynamics to create its emotional force. This is hooky, always melodic music that disorientates in the way it belies a dark, sometimes uncomfortable, lyrical undertone.
